This year's logo is based on Newgrange – an ancient 5,000-year-old Irish passage tomb (making it older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian Pyramids) located about 40 miles south of Dublin. It was chosen as the logo because of its light passage which is aligned to the rising sun on the Winter Solstice.
One day in the year a beam of light penetrates the roof-box and travels up a long passage and into the inner chamber. As the sun rises higher, the beam of light widens, dramatically illuminating the chamber and revealing the carvings inside.
The innovative and precise use of light at Newgrange felt like a fitting way to represent ECOC, whilst also showcased Ireland's rich history and heritage.
